Clinical Treatments
Maintaining the health and appearance of your skin relies on gentle but effective daily care and regular visits to your dermatologist’s office to help prevent, diagnose and treat any potential abnormalities. The skin is susceptible to many different conditions, from acne, eczema and psoriasis to moles, warts and skin cancer lesions. Detecting these conditions as early as possible can often help minimize long-term damage to the skin, while a customized skincare regimen can help reduce the risk of developing these conditions and related complications.
Our doctors are highly trained and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of general skin conditions such as moles and birthmarks, rosacea, acne, skin cancer and more. In addition to having your skin examined by a professional on a regular basis, it is important to practice healthy skin care habits on a daily basis to help protect conditions from developing. Unhealthy skin care habits can lead to long-term problems such as skin cancer and premature aging.
Acne Treatments
Acne effects all ages and all skin types. Adult acne is particularly concerning, because as adults we are battling acne and worrying about wrinkles. There are many different treatment options available for acne, and it can be confusing to know what to chose. Katie, Tiffany, and Sonja will help you determine the best course of treatment for your skin, and we will have your skin looking radiant in no time at all!
Intense Pulsed Light Acne Therapy
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) has now proven to be one of the most effective acne therapies available today. In many cases, we can prevent our clients from needing to go on aggressive oral medications such as Accutane or long-term antibiotics. The shorter wavelengths of IPL, in the blue-light spectrum, attack p-acne bacteria on the surface and in the sebaceous gland. We recommend a series of 3-4 treatments, once every two weeks. Along with a home skincare program designed for acne-prone skin, you can experience significant long-term clearance.
Acne FAQ
Dry Skin
Dry skin is a common condition that can develop as a result of certain skin diseases like psoriasis or environmental factors such as cold weather, hot showers, harsh soaps and sun exposure. Patients with this condition often experience skin that feels rough, tight and may be itchy or red. For most, this is only a temporary problem and can be managed through simple home and life measures, including using moisturizers and special creams or avoiding hot showers and baths. For more severe cases, prescription creams and ointments may be recommended to calm skin.
Keloid Treatment
Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissue that forms after a skin injury such as a surgical incision or wound. A keloid may be red, pink or flesh-colored and forms over the site of the injury as a nodular or ridged growth. The cause of keloids is unknown, but they are believed to be a result of the body’s failure to end the healing process and stop repairing skin. They may be hereditary as well.
Treatment for keloids is not usually necessary since they are harmless and may disappear over time. However, for cosmetic purposes, cryotherapy, steroid injections or laser treatments may be used to remove the keloid.
Moles and Birthmarks
Moles and other birthmarks are benign pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink or purple (vascular lesions, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Though most birthmarks are harmless, they may develop into cancer. Moles exhibiting any of the following warning signs should be examined by a professional immediately:
- Larger than six millimeters.
- Itches or bleeds.
- Rapidly changes in color, size or shape.
- Has multiple colors.
- Is located where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp.
Depending on their depth, location and color, as well as the patient’s skin type, age and other factors, treatment for benign but unattractive birthmarks may take the form of laser or pulsed light therapy, microdermabrasion or surgical excision.
